Overview
The Aembit Secrets Operator fails to retrieve and inject credentials for a workload when an access policy enforces a CrowdStrike access condition. This results in continuous authentication failures with the error signature Unauthorized / NoDataFound. Associated logs may also show the warning WRN: Unable to retrieve CrowdStrike Device.
Relates To
- Deployment Type: Kubernetes
- Aembit Component: Aembit Secrets Operator
- Resources/Tooling: CrowdStrike Host Sensor
Cause
A required host volume mount is missing from the Aembit Secrets Operator's pod specification. This misconfiguration prevents the operator from reading local CrowdStrike sensor metadata from the Kubernetes node. Consequently, the workload assessment payload sent for authentication lacks host identification data, causing the CrowdStrike access condition evaluation to fail.
Solution
1. Audit Operator Deployment: Inspect the volumes and volumeMounts sections of the Aembit Secrets Operator's pod specification (e.g., in its Deployment or DaemonSet manifest).
2. Restore Host Volume Mount: Compare the configuration against a known-good deployment or Aembit's official deployment manifests. Add the missing host volume mount required for reading local CrowdStrike sensor data.
3. Apply Configuration: Apply the corrected manifest to the Kubernetes cluster to redeploy the Aembit Secrets Operator pods.
Verification
1. Re-enable Access Condition: If the CrowdStrike access condition was disabled as a workaround, re-enable it in the relevant Aembit access policy.
2. Confirm Credential Injection: Verify that the target workload pod starts successfully and that credentials are now being injected without Unauthorized / NoDataFound errors.
3. Inspect Authentication Telemetry (Optional): Review Aembit's authentication event logs for the workload. Confirm the WorkloadAssessment object now contains a populated host field with a crowdStrike.agentId, similar to the following structure:
[SIMPLIFIED TEMPLATE]
// The WorkloadAssessment object in the event log
// should now contain host sensor data.

hostname: <WORKLOAD_HOSTNAME>

crowdStrike:
agentId: <CROWDSTRIKE_AGENT_ID>
